MXG's 200-game Challenge

Hi, I'm MXG.138, on the NA server for Starcraft II. In this blog, starting February 19, 2011, I am going to post my next 200 Starcraft II 1v1 ladder matches with an analysis of how each game went and what I could have done differently.

As of Feb. 19, I am a Protoss player at 2700 points in Diamond, with a W/L of 303/281.

The purpose of this is to provide entertainment and analysis of some fun games while becoming a better gamer. Enjoy!

yo! i had to take a 2 month break from SC2 due to school being crazy, but I’m getting back into the groove now. I might delete all my posts and start fresh, since things have changed so much and there was a season reset. glad to see you’re interested. I’ll probably reboot it later today (and make a reddit post, haha)

Game 40 - PvT - Backwater Gulch (Win)

The Good:

  • Scouted and stopped Janook’s TvP build
  • Good early stalker harassment
  • Good compositional choices
  • Good upgrades
  • Good job not supply-blocking

The Bad:

  • Awful probe production. Preventing a push does not mean I should cut probes
  • Midgame push wasn’t the best decision, economically. For cost, I lost that battle badly.

Game 39 - PvP - The Shattered Temple (Win)

The Good:

  • 4 zealots is the magic number to push with in a 4gate with a ramp one-FF-wide.

The Bad:

  • Could’ve microed my stalkers out of the way/up the ramp better
  • Didn’t even realize he had made a pylon in my base (map awareness)

    Game 38 - PvP - The Shattered Temple (Loss)

    The Good:

    • Tried something new.

    The Bad:

    • Keep scouting probe alive. Very useful to have.
    • Before trying something new, learn a damn build order. I got destroyed b/c I was really weak with 3 phoenixes and a small army.

    Game 37 - PvZ - Typhon Peaks (Win)

    The Good:

    • Decent # of probes, but could’ve kept going.

    The Bad:

    • Take an earlier 3rd & 4th? Keep probes coming & useful.
    • Don’t supply block myself.
    • Use CB on forge. Keep forge upgrading.

    Game 36 - PvZ - Backwater Gulch (Win)

    I should not have won this game

    The Good:

    • Capitalized on a HUGE series of positioning errors in opponent’s play
    • Decent FFs

    The Bad:

    • Sim-city hurt me more than helped.
    • Not-great on probe production, esp. after they were killed

    Current record: 18-18

    Game 35 - PvZ - Backwater Gulch (Loss)

    The Good:

    • Good probe production
    • Good upgrades
    • Played a tough game. My opponent was very good.

    The Bad:

    • Don’t hardwall my expo in. Poor probes.
    • Scouting could’ve been better on those mutas. There was a timing window where I could have just killed him. Scouting would’ve shown me that, too.
    • Some better harassment to slow his production would’ve really helped.

    Game 34 - PvZ - Backwater Gulch (Loss)

    The Good:

    • Tried something new?

    The Bad:

    • Forge FE does not work well on Backwater Gulch - especially not when I have no idea where to position things on the map.

    Game 33 - PvT - Xel'Naga Caverns (Loss)

    The Good:

    • Pretty solid play, overall
    • Not bad probe production (could’ve been better but has been worse)

    The Bad:

    • Poor positioning in the engagement. Sniping the vikings could’ve won me the game
    • Should get forges earlier - right when 2nd base is up & running.

    Game 32 - PvT - Typhon Peaks (Win)

    The Good:

    • He made marines. I make marine-killers.
    • Good probe production.
    • Good scouting, especially in terms of stopping the drops.

    The Bad:

    • Don’t supply-block myself. Probes take supply and when I’m constantly producing them I need to build more damn pylons
